Scouting and outdoor activities go hand in hand
Tom has been involved in scouting since the early 90’s, initially helping as a parent, then a Scoutmaster, and eventually Board President of the Iroquois Trail Council. He has served as medical staff for three National Jamborees and is proud to have fledged 25 Eagle Scouts. He continues to serve as a board member for Western New York Scouting and is actively involved in his local troop as a merit badge counselor.
Scouting helped to sate Tom’s passion for outdoor activities. While he does not backpack as much as he used to, he continues to enjoy hiking, cycling, fishing, and sailing on the Erie Canal and Lake Ontario. The pandemic helped to improve his golf game and he continues to sharpen his skills in hopes of one day besting Mike Suk in a match.
Long history of organized medicine involvement
Tom was drawn to organized medicine by the example of his parents, Jan and Rosemary Madejski. Jan served as president of the New York State Board of Pharmacy, and Rosemary served as the first woman president of the Pharmaceutical Society of the State of New York. They set an example and demonstrated a pathway of duty to the profession and the critical importance of advocacy to shape professional practice and to serve patients in the best way possible. Tom joined the AMA in 1982 and became active when he began his practice in upstate New York in 1990. He became involved in the ACP and MSSNY and eventually served MSSNY as president in 2018. MSSNY faced several challenges at that time but with focus and teamwork Tom led MSSNY during a time of increased membership and successful advocacy.
Advocacy requires preparation, teamwork, communication
“During my time as MSSNY president we faced challenges that were shared by other states. After conferring with my friends and state presidents throughout our region we decided to work together on advocacy issues such as Medicare reform, scope of practice, and marijuana—all with great success. To expand our voice, we also looked for partners outside of medicine such as parent teacher associations, public health directors, MADD, SAM, and other groups with mutual interests. I’m proud of our commitment on the BOT, and the action of our AMA advocacy team to amplify our voice and influence to get our patients the care they need.
“I’ve been honored to serve on the Board these past four years, and I am proud of the work we’ve done, particularly navigating through the maelstrom of the pandemic. Our three pillars of activity remain our focus: Patient and physician satisfaction; medical education; and public health. The pillars stand upon the foundation of medicine—our Federation that constitutes the House of Delegates. The pandemic along with other factors has caused erosion of some of our foundation. Our AMA has demonstrated ways to grow membership, improve wellness and expand our advocacy efforts. We need to find new ways to help each other across organizations to strengthen our foundation and continue to build upon the pillars.”
